Themes/ Thrust Areas

iCET - Thrust Areas

The ministry along with committee members has identified 5 themes/ thrust areas mentioned below, on which iCET/GCI is expected to focus on and ensure maximize participation by Indian and US research institutions in the five thematic areas. The 5 thrust areas will generate globally competitive human resource and technologies in future.

Semiconductor Technology & Manufacturing

Semiconductor technology and manufacturing are at the heart of modern electronics. These processes involve the fabrication of semiconductor devices, which are the building blocks of electronic circuits. Semiconductor manufacturing involves a series of complex steps and the industries are constantly evolving, with advancements in materials, processes, and equipment driving progress. Various technologies of recent innovations enable higher performance and energy efficiency in semiconductor devices. From computers and smartphones to automobile electronics and industrial automation systems, semiconductor technology and manufacturing are essential to the development of electronic devices.

Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security

In light of the world's expanding population, deteriorating environment, and changing climate, sustainable agriculture and food security are urgent concerns. Sustainable agriculture involves practices like water management, soil health etc. that minimize environmental impact, conserve natural resources, and promote social equity and economic viability. Similarly, to achieve food security multiple dimensions like production, nutrition etc. needs to be addressed. Technology plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable agriculture and food security. Innovations such as precision agriculture, biotechnology, remote sensing, and digital platforms enable more efficient resource use, better decision-making, and enhanced productivity while reducing environmental impacts. To ensure that everyone has access to food in the future, cooperation, creativity, and investments in resilient food systems and sustainable practices are crucial.

Sustainable Energy & Environment

In the modern world, conservation of the environment and sustainable energy are essential subjects. They cover a range of tactics meant to lessen pollution, cut down on carbon emissions, and protect the environment for coming generations. For a more sustainable future, a number of important issues including energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, climate change, etc., must be tackled. In order to achieve sustainability goals and overcome current obstacles, research and development in clean energy technologies, sustainable agriculture, waste management, and other fields should continue. Governments, corporations, communities, and individuals may collaborate together to create a more resilient and sustainable future.

Health Equity and Pandemic Preparedness

One of the most important factors in pandemic preparedness is health equity. It places a strong emphasis on the equitable distribution of healthcare resources, opportunities, and outcomes for all individuals, irrespective of their socioeconomic level, ethnicity, background, or other variables. Incorporating several elements such as healthcare infrastructure, health education, and access to healthcare services can guarantee health equity during pandemic preparedness. By incorporating these elements into pandemic preparation initiatives, public health professionals and policymakers can seek to lessen inequalities and advance the health and wellbeing of all people and communities.

Critical Emerging Technologies

(Advanced Materials, Telecommunications, AI, Cyber Security and Quantum Science)

Emerging technologies are constantly shaping our world and driving innovation across various fields. In the upcoming years, the crucial developing technologies such as Advanced Materials, Telecommunications, AI, Cyber Security and Quantum Science are probably going to have a big influence. These emerging technologies have the potential to transform industries, driving innovation, improve quality of life, and address pressing global challenges. However, there are sociological, legal, and ethical issues that come with their broad acceptance that must be properly addressed.
